About this Pilgrimage

From Reformation Roots to Musical Heights
A Pilgrimage of Faith and Witness with Luther, Bach, and Bonhoeffer

Day 1 – Departure

We depart from Atlanta or Charlotte on an overnight flight to Germany, pilgrims from two traditions—Episcopal and Lutheran—bound together for a sacred journey. Together we step into a shared story that stretches across continents and centuries.

Day 2 – Arrival in Frankfurt / Mainz

We land in Frankfurt and head straight to Mainz. Here, we’ll visit the Gutenberg Museum, honoring the revolutionary invention that helped spread the Reformation. We’ll reflect on the power of the written word and give thanks for safe arrival and new companions. Overnight at the hotel in Mainz (D)

Day 3 – Worms and Eisenach

We rise early and depart for Worms, where Luther made his bold stand at the Diet of Worms in 1521. We’ll explore the Luther MonumentSt. Peter’s Cathedral, and walk the very ground where one man’s conviction changed the course of history. Then our journey takes us through the heart of Germany to Eisenach, nestled in the Thuringian forest. This is where young Luther sang for his supper as a schoolboy and later returned to hide in plain sight.  Overnight at the hotel in Eisenach (B,D)

Day 4 – Wartburg Castle and Wittenberg

A short morning drive brings us to Wartburg Castle, towering above Eisenach like a fortress of faith. Here, in protective exile, Luther translated the New Testament into German. After lunch we head toward the heart of the Reformation: Wittenberg. We’ll visit the Castle Church, where Luther posted his 95 Theses, and get a glimpse of this historic town.  Overnight at the hotel in Wittenberg (B,D)

Day 5 – Leipzig (Sunday Worship)

On this holy day, we journey to Leipzig where J.S. Bach lived, taught, and composed, and we’ll worship at St. Thomas Church, where he served as cantor. Music, liturgy, and faith converge in this soul-stirring city. We arrive in Dresden and end the day with a walk and dinner.  Overnight at the hotel in Dresden (B,D)

Day 6 – Dresden

We spend the day in Dresden, a city once reduced to ashes and now risen with breathtaking beauty. We’ll explore the Zwinger Palace and the iconic Semper Opera, architectural gems that speak to resilience through art and culture. A visit to the Frauenkirche—lovingly reconstructed after its wartime destruction—invites quiet awe and prayer. We remember how even the broken can be made whole. Optional afternoon visits include the Green Vault or Royal Palace Museum, before we gather for dinner and rest in this remarkable city. Overnight at the hotel in Dresden  (B,D)

Day 7 – Berlin

After breakfast, we journey to Berlin, a city where history whispers from every corner and the weight of the 20th century still lingers. Upon arrival, we’ll visit the Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of division and reunion, and pause at the Reichstag, the seat of German government. The majestic Berliner Dom (Lutheran Cathedral) reminds us of the Church’s enduring presence even amid political turmoil. We’ll reflect on the tension between empire and Gospel, state and conscience. Overnight at the hotel in Berlin (B, D)

Day 8 – Berlin

This day centers on courageous resistance and moral clarity, with a visit to the Bonhoeffer House, where the pastor and theologian lived, wrote, and plotted against Hitler’s regime. We will also visit the Nazi Resistance Museum and the Holocaust Memorial. In the late afternoon, we’ll come together for a closing Eucharist—a sacred time to give thanks, share what we’ve seen and felt, and mark the journey’s end with grace and hope. Overnight at the hotel in Berlin (B, D)

Day 9 – Torgau and the Journey to Prague

At Torgau Castle, we reflect on the 1544 meeting where Lutheran and Reformed leaders sought a common path—an early, imperfect step toward Christian unity. In the Chapel of Hartenfels Castle, the first Protestant church built for worship. Along the Elbe River, we walk prayerfully to the “Meeting of the Brothers” monument, marking the symbolic handshake between Soviet and American forces in 1945. We continue to Prague, city of stunning spires and spiritual complexity. Perhaps we worship that night with fellow Anglicans at St. Clement’s Church, a tender reminder that our communion stretches far beyond borders.   Overnight at the hotel in Prague (B,D)

Day 10 – Prague: Shadows and Saints

Prague reveals the deep and painful divisions born from the Reformation. At Prague Castle, we revisit the dramatic story of the Defenestration of 1618, where Protestant nobles famously hurled Catholic emissaries out a window. (The truth? They landed on manure—or were caught by angels, depending on who you ask.) Inside the castle, we take in the grandeur of St. Vitus CathedralSt. George’s Basilica, and the charming Golden Lane, all layered with the tensions of empire, faith, and reform.

Crossing the Charles Bridge, we step into the Old Town, where the story of Jan Hus—a courageous priest and early reformer—still echoes. At the Bethlehem Chapel, where he preached against corruption and called for reform a century before Luther, we consider the cost of truth-telling. We continue to the Astronomical Clock and the Jan Hus Monument, rising in defiant beauty over the Market Square. Overnight at the hotel in Prague (B,D)

Day 11 – Departure: Returning with Wider Vision

We gather one last time for breakfast and prayerful farewells before heading to Prague Airport. This extension has brought new questions, deeper stories, and a broader view of the Reformation’s complexity. We return home with clearer eyes—grateful for our heritage, humbled by history, and committed to a faith that builds bridges. (B)
